Shedrick floors
Jeter Local fans
disappointed by
BXF fighter's KO
Philadelphia's
James Shedrick,
Jr. sent the
locals home in a
blue mood last
Friday as he
knocked out
hometown
favorite Tony
Jeter in the
fourth and final
round at BXF
Fitness Center
in Millersville.
It was Jeter's
first loss in
since coming
back in October
with a win after
a 4-year layoff.
A 29-year-old
middleweight
from
Stevensville,
Jeter started
out slowly in
round one as
southpaw
Shedrick, 31,
used his right
jab effectively.
Jeter rallied in
the second
ninety seconds,
scoring with a
right cross and
seeming to hurt
the
Philadelphian
with a one-two.
Shedrick's
strong jab
snapped the
Marylander's
head back on
more than one
occasion in the
second round,
while Jeter was
not as accurate
with his
aggression
The third
round saw both
fighters pick up
the pace, but
Shedrick's
superior ring
management
allowed him to
avoid Jeter's
right hand.
Jeter did land a
pair of one-two
combinations in
the round, but
nothing
substantial.
Things
came to a
shocking halt in
the fourth,
however, as
halfway through
the stanza Jeter
walked into a
textbook right
hook from
Shedrick that
nailed him right
in the face.
Jeter fell back
with a thud,
rolled over on
his stomach,
lying on his
face as referee
John Gradowski
counted him out
at the 1:21
mark.
The
crowd, many of
them Jeter
supporters, was
both stunned and
concerned. A
handful of
Jeter's family
members
approached
ringside, their
faces masked
with worry as
Jeter was
attended to by
the ringside
doctors while
lying on his
back. After
almost 10
minutes Jeter
sat up, then
bounced to his
feet, much to
the relief of
the audience.
Shedrick evened
his record to
4-4 (2 KOs)
while Jeter
drops to 4-2
(4).
The main
event saw
34-year-old
middleweight
"King" James
McCallister of
Greenbelt,
stepping up to
light
heavyweight at
172.5 pounds,
claim a
hard-fought
unanimous
8-round decision
over tough
32-year-old Mike
Eatmon, 170.75
pounds, of
Wilson, North
Carolina. After
an uneventful
first round,
McCallister grew
more aggressive,
scoring with
several left
hooks and left
jabs over the
first half of
the bout,
landing occasion
straight rights
as well.
Eatmon
was nothing if
not relentless,
however, and
seemed to get
stronger as the
fight wore on.
Remaining
poised, he kept
pressing the
issue, backing
up McCallister
with sneaky lead
rights as
McCallister kept
his left hand
low. In the
bout's second
half McCallister
suffered from
swelling under
the left eye and
his punch output
began dropping.
But he used his
ring smarts to
hold when
necessary and
move away as the
occasion
demanded it. The
big lead he
built up in the
first four
rounds enabled
him to hold on;
judges Ken
Chevalier and
Don Risher
scored 78-74
while John
Gradowski wrote
77-75, all for
McCallister.
"I fought
two divisions
above my normal
weight, so the
guy was strong;
he just kept
coming," said
McCallister
afterward. I
couldn't knock
him out, but I
still did enough
to win."
The first
of the four pro
bouts saw
middleweight
Rodney Green,
3-3-1, of
Wilson, NC
dominate a
lifeless John
Terry, 2-2 (1),
of Portsmouth,
VA over 6 rounds
for an easy
unanimous
decision, while
in the remaining
pro fight
Baltimore
featherweight
Tyrell Samuel,
4-0 (2) overcame
a slow start to
stop James
Franks, 1-1 (1),
Newport News,
VA, on a TKO
with just 15
seconds left in
their 4-round
match.
The pro
bouts were
preceded by 5
lively amateur
bouts featuring
fighters from
Boxing Extreme
Fitness, the
University of
Maryland boxing
team, the
Annapolis Boxing
Club, Brooklyn
(MD) Boxing Club
and 757 Boxing
Club of
Virginia. The
amateur winners
included Larry
Mitros and
Dimitri
Skolovski (both
from University
of Maryland),
Chris Milton and
Colin O'Laughlin
(both from
Boxing Extreme
Fitness) and
Kisou Kusuzaki
(Brooklyn Boxing
Club).
The next
BXF show will be
held on January
13th. The next
area boxing show
will take place
Wednesday,
December 7th at
Martin's West in
Woodlawn,
promoted byJake
"The Snake"
Smith.
